Super Typhoon Fung-wong Ravages the Philippines: Two Lives Lost and Large-Scale Displacement Confirmed

The Philippines has been hit hard by Super Typhoon Fung-wong, which left a minimum of two fatalities and displaced more than 1.4 million individuals.

Officials stated that the powerful weather system triggered extensive flash flooding, coastal inundation, mudslides, and destructive high-velocity gusts, prompting the relocation of millions of residents nationwide.

Widespread Destruction and Rescue Efforts

In the town of Pandan, a severely affected area, disaster response teams documented rising waters reaching rooftop levels and homes washed out by the powerful currents.

Our team rescued fourteen people who were trapped atop a house surrounded by water in a flood-prone area,” an emergency official stated. “A father also called in panic, reporting the roof of his house was at risk of tearing away due to the storm. We saved him and four relatives.”

By Monday, officials announced at least two deaths: one from drowning on the island and a second individual killed when her house collapsed in eastern Samar.

Storm Intensity and Forecast

The super typhoon weakened to a typhoon on Monday morning as it crossed the main island, home to the national capital.

Per the state weather service, the storm’s sustained wind speed dropped from 115 mph to 102 mph, though wind bursts peaked at more than 275 km/h.

The storm system is expected to lose strength as it moves in the direction of Taiwan.

Relief and Assessment

The country’s emergency management agency indicated it was still working to assess damage on buildings and roads.

Roughly 6,000 evacuation centres have been opened to temporarily house 92,000 families.

Recent Context and Climate Impact

Fung-wong struck just days after another severe storm, that claimed hundreds of lives and left dozens unaccounted for before moving on toward Vietnam, causing five deaths there.

Search operations for those still missing were halted recently over risks to emergency personnel.

The climate crisis is making cyclones more intense and frequent. This typhoon marks the twenty-first storm to hit the Philippines in 2025.

Scientists have found that the frequency of intense cyclones striking the islands has risen doubled over the last two decades.

Global assessments indicate that intense storms result in approximately US$3.5 million in damage for the Philippines annually.

The Philippine president issued an emergency declaration on Thursday due to the extensive devastation caused by Kalmaegi and anticipated impacts from Fung-wong.
