Balloons carrying numerous packages of cigarettes have caused flight disruptions in Lithuania, as the country's main airport was required to halt operations for hours when multiple of them entered the country's airspace.
Air Travel Interruptions
The temporary shutdown led to the cancellation of 30 flights disrupting thousands of passengers, with officials warning that further disruptions were possible throughout Monday.
National Security Measures
Border security stated that multiple atmospheric balloons were spotted infiltrating Lithuania from neighboring Belarus, with two balloons ending up right above the main terminal.
Up to 14 of the meteorological devices deployed throughout the weekend floated over the capital region, which is the location of Lithuania's capital city and close to the frontier with Belarus.
Illegal Goods Seizure
At least 11 balloons carrying 18,000 packs of contraband smoking materials have since been recovered, though more recoveries are anticipated, according to law enforcement authorities.
International Illegal Trade
Despite the disruption, officials emphasized that "Weather devices carrying illegal goods - Belarusian smoking products - are not unusual in Lithuania, Latvia, and Poland."
Since January, 544 balloons have been documented crossing into Lithuania from Belarus, while nearly a thousand were documented the previous year.
Neighboring Country Impact
At the same time, the border area of Poland, which likewise adjoins Belarus, has recorded more than 100 cases in which smuggled items were delivered from its adjacent country employing the weather devices.
Smuggling Techniques
In response to questions about why criminal organizations employ a technique that proves highly susceptible to weather elements rather than more controllable drones, officials clarified that "Weather devices are simple mechanisms used by illegal traders - they are cheaper than drones for carrying smoking materials from Belarus."
Law Enforcement Objectives
Representatives further stated that "The objective of our agencies is to seize the largest possible amounts of illegal goods and to arrest masterminds and perpetrators so that this activity become unprofitable and present no risk to commercial air travel."
International Concerns
The recent incidents occur during a period of growing anxiety in Europe following various aerial device infiltrations that have caused air traffic disruption across the continent.
Recent incidents in adjacent nations have led European authorities to speed up talks about improving airspace protection throughout the region.
