WHO Sounds Alert Over Critical Lack of Weight-Loss Jabs

Fewer than a tenth of people who could benefit from obesity jabs including Wegovy are able to get them, warns the WHO as it publishes its initial guidance on the drugs.

Considering in excess of 1,000,000,000 individuals worldwide now living with obesity, it is calling for broader and more equitable availability to this class of drugs.

Per forecasts, over two billion will be living with obesity by 2030 without intervention.

"The latest guidelines recognises that excess weight is a lifelong illness that can be addressed with comprehensive and lifelong treatment," remarked the agency's head Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus.

Significant expense, limited production capacity, and logistical bottlenecks are significant obstacles to widespread availability to the treatments that can help people shift significant body mass, explains the body.

Even under the present best projected outlook, the supply of such drugs would only suffice for approximately 100 million people – less than 10% of the global need, as stated by the health organization.

The guideline urges governments and firms to expand access, through approaches including licensing agreements.

Exclusive production rights on the active ingredient – the core component of Novo Nordisk's Wegovy – is set to lapse in several countries in 2026.

How Weight-Loss Drugs Work

These medications imitate a natural hormone to reduce digestion speed, curb appetite and increase the sense of being full so individuals reduce food intake.

People usually begin shedding pounds within a few weeks of commencing the once-weekly jabs.

Evidence points to users may regain a significant portion a year later of stopping the treatment, as their typical hunger come back.

Being carrying excess weight raises your chance for experiencing medical conditions, such as type 2 diabetes, cardiovascular issues, brain attack, and certain malignancies.

Obesity affects individuals in all nations and was linked to over three and a half million deaths worldwide in 2024, as per the WHO.
